Aquabore: The History of Borehole Drilling

Borehole drilling has a long and interesting history and even dates back more than 1800 years ago. The speed and ease that we experience today is far from where they started. We dug up some amazing facts about what borehole drilling looked like years ago, and how it has evolved since. Here is what we found:

Borehole drilling was first used for mining in China. A group of men would jump on and off a beam to impact the drill bit while oxen and buffalo would rotate the boring tool. This same method was how petrol was extracted in the 1860’s.

Drilling of a borehole used to take almost 10 years to complete. Now, only a couple of days is required to drill a standard sized borehole.  In present time, the depth of a borehole for household use can range from about 100 to 500 feet. It is advised however that the depth of the well be determined based on the geology and underground water levels of the area.

Around the world, boreholes have far exceeded the standard depth , with the longest borehole depth reaching 40,604 feet. That is 12,376 meters!
